Partnering on additive manufacturing for aircraft MRO

Oerlikon and Lufthansa Technik has today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish processes for additive manufacturing (AM) in aicraft MRO. Lufthansa Technik, subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group, provides maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services for the aerospace industry. The partnership is an important step toward the industrialization of AM in the aircraft MRO industry and aims to take advantage of potential flexibility and cost savings in manufacturing, procurement, warehousing and supply chain management.

Oerlikon AM and Lufthansa Technik will build up representative component geometrics which will be printed on identical 3D printers using the same process parameters and powder specifications at Oerlikon AM Charlotte (North Carolina, USA), Oerlikon AM Barleben (Germany) and Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg (Germany).

The partnership is for a one-year period and may be extended to other 3D printer models as more data on manufacturing processes is collected. The study results will be shared with relevant industry bodies to help defining standards for the qualification and approval of aircraft components.

I provided RE3DTECH three laser scanned ".stl" files for 3-D printing of prototypes. I used their on-line quote and file delivery process. The file acceptance and resultant quote were returned quickly. The parts were received at the quoted time. The parts are quite complex with many holes, angles, curvatures and notches. Each of the parts came out identical to the scanned parts dimensionally and passed the form/fit/function test in the upper level assembly. RE3DTECH has a high quality business process and produces high quality products. I will use them for future prototyping projects and recommend RE3DTECH.
